History Tells: The iconic "Sniper at Work" sign originated during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Erected by the Provisional IRA's South Armagh Brigade in the 1990s, the mock road signs were placed in areas like Crossmaglen to warn British security forces of an active, highly effective sniping campaign that heavily restricted troop movements. The signs were both a tactical and psychological weapon.
They referred specifically to IRA sniper teams utilizing long-range Barrett .50 caliber rifles. By mimicking standard road construction warnings, the sign served as a chilling reminder to British patrols that they were under constant threat.
Today, the sign is often viewed as a piece of military history. Reproductions and vintage photographs of it are frequently collected as artifacts from the Northern Ireland conflict.
